You hear about artificial intelligence everywhere but don’t know where to begin? Here’s the essentials in a few minutes, no jargon.

What is generative AI?

Most of the tools people talk about today (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude…) are generative AI: they produce text, images or code from a simple written request. You talk to them in plain language, they answer.

Under the hood, these tools have “read” huge amounts of text and learned to predict the most likely continuation. That’s what lets them write, summarize, translate or explain, and also what explains their limits.

What it does well

• Writing and rephrasing: emails, messages, summaries, drafts.
• Explaining a complex topic simply, at your level.
• Summarizing a long text into a few points.
• Translating quickly and fairly well.
• Brainstorming when you’re stuck.

What to keep in mind

• It can be confidently wrong: it sometimes invents facts (called “hallucination”). Always check anything important.
• It doesn’t know recent news by default, unless the tool can search the web.
• It has no opinion or intent: it’s an assistant, not an oracle.
